Honda Civic Brake Light Not Working

Honda Civics are one of the most popular Honda cars. They were designed to be reliable. That doesn’t mean that you won’t run into issues from time to time. When operating your Honda Civic you may run into issues with the brake lights not working properly. This can include the brake light staying on, turning on at times when you do not need it, staying on, or blinking. Many of these issues come down to the same problem.

A common reason for a brake light not working in a Honda Civic is a burnt-out bulb. The filament inside the bulb can break over time, leading to the light failing. The solution is to replace the faulty bulb with a new one. This is a simple and quick fix that can often be done without the need for professional help.

Another potential cause for a brake light issue in a Honda Civic is a blown fuse. Each light circuit has a fuse that protects it from electrical surges. If a fuse blows, the corresponding light will stop working.

To fix this, locate the fuse box, identify the blown fuse using the diagram in the owner’s manual, and replace it with a new one of the same amperage.

Lastly, a malfunctioning brake light switch can also lead to brake light issues in a Honda Civic. This switch is activated when the brake pedal is pressed, turning on the brake lights. If it’s faulty, it may not activate the lights.

Replacing the brake light switch, which is typically located near the brake pedal, can resolve this issue and ensure that the brake lights function properly when the pedal is pressed.

When it comes to your Honda Civic brake lights not working, the majority of the time it is an issue that you can troubleshoot yourself. So let’s look at a few reasons why your Honda Civic brake light is not working and how to correct those issues.

Honda Civic Brake Light Stays On

Occasionally you might experience an issue where your brake light stays on even after you’ve turned your car off. There is a switch located right next to the brake pedal.

If your brake light stays on, it may be an issue with your brake switch. The brake pedal switch is inserted into a small hole, it needs a bolt to work properly. If the bolt falls off, the brake pedal will be pressed even when your foot is off of the brake pedal. To fix this issue, you need to replace the bolt on the brake light switch.

As a general rule, you should also check to make sure that your brake fluid is full. If you are low in brake fluid, it can cause issues with your brake lights.

Similar to the issue that causes your Honda Civic brake lights to remain on. There are a few things that could be causing this problem. Firstly, you should check to ensure that your emergency brake is not on and that your brake fluid levels are full.

If your Honda Civic light is not turning off it may be an issue caused by your brake fluid filter. You can access your brake fluid filter through the brake fluid reservoir. After removing the cap from the reservoir, remove and replace the filter.

The filter can affect the brake lights turning off due to the fact that the cap is not able to vent. This will throw off your Honda Civics system and cause it to improperly read fuel levels.

Honda Civic Brake Light Blinking

You may notice that your Honda Civic brake light is blinking on your dashboard even when you aren’t applying the breaks. This may be related to a connection issue.

If your Honda Civic lights are blinking, you should first reset your dashboard to see if that resolves the problem. Turn the car off and hold the reset button. While still holding the button, turn the key. Hold the button for an additional ten seconds after turning the car on.

If the problem persists after you’ve reset your dashboard, check your fuel levels and the fuel filter. You may also want to ensure that your fuses are properly inserted and do not need to be replaced.

As a general rule, it is also good to check the direct connection to your brake pedal as well. If the nut has come loose, your brake indicator may be coming on due to the connector pressing down on the pedal.

You may notice that your brake light is showing up on your Honda Civic dashboard. You will notice this in the same area where your other service lights come on. First check to ensure that your brake fluid is full. Otherwise, it may be a mechanical issue.

If you see your Honda Civic brake light on your dashboard you may need to reset it. There is a reset button on your dash, turn the car off and hold down the reset button. Keep holding the button and turn the key in the ignition. Hold for ten seconds before releasing the button.

This will clear the brake light from your dashboard. The brake light may also be displayed on your dashboard due to issues with your brake fluid filters. If your filter is not replaced it can lead to a miscommunication from your brakes electrical connection.

Even if you have the correct level of brake fluid, if your filter is old, it could tell you that your fluids are low.

Fuses don’t last forever, because if you use your Honda Civic often, you are more than likely to experience a blown fuse during the lifetime of your car. The good news is that fuses are easy to replace.

Lift the hood on your Honda Civic and locate the fuse box. Your brake light fuse might also be located in the front of your car on the passenger side. Once you’ve located the fuse box, open it and replace the brake light fuse. The brake light fuse is called the stop lamp fuse and it is a 15amp fuse that connects to the brake pedal.

You may encounter an issue with your Honda Civic where your brake lights will come on while your vehicle is in motion. This usually occurs when you have reached a certain speed range.

If your Honda Civic brake light comes on when you are accelerating, first check the brake fluid levels. If your levels are at the proper amount, replace the brake fluid filter, as it might be clogged. If the filter needs to be replaced, it will send mixed signals to your Honda Civic, causing the brake lights to turn on when you accelerate.

If your fluid levels and filter are properly filled and replaced, the issue could be related to your brake pads. If your brake pads have been worn thin, it could cause your brake light to turn on while you are accelerating.

When it comes to your Honda Civic lights not working, as a general rule, first check to see that your brake fluid is at a proper level. You can check to ensure that none of your fuses have blown out, and that your brake pedal parts have not been damaged.
