Honda Pilot Won’t Start (How To Fix)

Nothing can put a damper on your day like your Honda Pilot not starting. Before you can even think about fixing the problem, however, you will need to first figure out what is causing the vehicle to not start.

A primary reason for a Honda Pilot not starting is a dead battery. The battery may drain due to age, leaving it unable to provide enough power to start the engine. The solution is simple: jump-start the vehicle using jumper cables and another vehicle, and then drive it to charge the battery or replace it if necessary.

Another common issue could be a faulty starter motor. The starter is crucial for igniting the engine, and if it’s malfunctioning, the car won’t start. The solution here is to replace the starter motor. Once replaced, the starter should effectively ignite the engine, allowing your Honda Pilot to start smoothly.

Fuel system problems can also prevent a Honda Pilot from starting. If the fuel pump is defective or the fuel filter is clogged, fuel cannot reach the engine properly. The fix involves either replacing the fuel pump or cleaning or replacing the fuel filter. This ensures a steady and adequate fuel supply to the engine, enabling it to start and run efficiently.

If, however, the issue is with the starter or alternator, you are looking at a higher price tag for the part. Furthermore, if you’re not comfortable replacing these parts, then you have the added cost of labor from a mechanic.

Honda Pilot Cranks But Won’t Start

When you try to start your vehicle but only hear a chirping-like sound coming from the engine, that is called cranking and it shows that your Honda Pilot’s starter is working. But what if the vehicle cranks but doesn’t start?

A Honda Pilot that cranks but won’t start typically has a weak battery. Charging the battery or getting a jump start may cause the vehicle to start, but this isn’t a long-term solution. Replacing the battery with a new one will provide a more permanent solution to the problem.

Honda Pilot Won’t Start Clicking

A clicking noise when a car won’t start is one of the most common problems that just about any vehicle can experience.Thankfully, this problem is fairly easy to diagnose, but could be caused by a few different things.

A Honda Pilot that won’t start but makes a clicking noise has an issue with the battery or the alternator. The battery could be weak or the battery terminals corroded, or the alternator may be going bad. The issue could also be caused by the starter, and will need to be replaced.

Honda Pilot Won’t Start Lights Flashing

Honda Pilots are reliable vehicles, but are not without their share of problems. When the vehicle won’t start but the lights are flashing, that is your sign that something is wrong with the battery.

A Honda Pilot that won’t start but its lights are flashing is a sign that the battery doesn’t have sufficient charge to crank the vehicle. Thankfully, the problem can usually be resolved by replacing the battery.

Honda Pilot Hard To Start

You may think that a hard-to-start Honda Pilot is just something you will have to deal with. After all, the vehicle does start, it just takes awhile to get going. What if I told you that you didn’t just have to deal with the issue and could potentially fix the problem for good?

When your Honda Pilot is hard to start, the first thing to check is the battery, grounds, and cables. If those all check out, then the issue is usually caused by a fuel pump that won’t hold pressure, which causes the fuel to drain back into the fuel tank.

When checking the battery, make sure there isn’t any corrosion on the terminals or cables. Clean any corrosion off the battery and replace any frayed cables. If the battery and all its parts look good, then the issue is probably with the fuel pump, which will need to be replaced.

When your anti-theft system is engaged it can cause your Honda Pilot to not start. This issue can typically be corrected by turning the anti-theft system off or resetting the system. Look for the anti-theft system button on your vehicle’s dash.

If you cannot find the button to turn the system off, refer to your owners’ manual for assistance. You can also reset the anti-theft system by sliding your key out of the FOB, and then use the key to unlock the Honda’s door without releasing it. Keep the key in this position for about 30 seconds. Honda Pilot Won’t Start Brake Stuck

Key in a car ignition

It is not uncommon to experience multiple issues with your Honda Pilot at the same time. In most cases, the two issues, such as a vehicle that won’t start and also has a stuck brake pedal, are not separate from one another.

When the Honda Pilot won’t start and the brake is stuck, the issue is usually caused by an exhausted brake vacuum. This usually occurs when you push on the brake when the engine isn’t running, which exhausts the reserve vacuum that is in the car when it’s not running.

The good news is that when you have exhausted the brake vacuum, simply wait several minutes before pressing on the brake pedal again. After the allotted time has passed, start the vehicle and press on the brakes.

Honda Pilot Won’t Start Cold Weather

Living things aren’t the only ones that can be affected by cold weather. Your Honda Pilot can also be difficult to start when the temperature starts to drop.

A Honda Pilot that won’t start in cold weather is not an uncommon problem, and is usually caused by the low temps affecting the battery. This occurs because cold weather can affect the battery’s ability to hold a charge.

Jump starting the battery will usually correct the problem. You should also make sure to turn off any accessories, such as the heater or radio, when trying to start a cold battery.

Honda Pilot Won’t Start Grinding Noise

No one wants to hear a grinding noise coming from their vehicle, especially when it is coming from a vehicle that won’t start.

A grinding noise accompanied by your Honda Pilot not starting is a sign that the starter is going bad. The noise is caused when the start doesn’t line up properly, or has damaged gears. The only way to correct the problem is to replace the starter.

Unfortunately, new starters can be a little expensive. Because of this, some people choose to purchase a rebuilt starter to help save money. Whether you’re buying a new or rebuilt starter, you should only purchase from a reputable business, which will help ensure you receive a quality part.
